Franchise #5

History Brief

Franchise #5 has been one of the most stable in TCBA history, The Bergen Barflies began play in 1921, led by Stu McCorkindale. The team remained in Bergen from ’21 until after the 1974 season. McCorkindale turned the team over to cohort Tom Meade in 1934, although the Barflies continued to play in Bergen for the next 22 seasons. In 1956, McCorkindale returned from his hiatus, directing the Bergen franchise until 1975, when the TCBA’s only female team owner, Teri Hackbart, attempted to purchase Frnachise 5 from Stu. That experiment lasted one season, after which McCorkindale regained control continuously through the 1995 season. In the winter of 1995-96, a diplomatic crisis, known in TCBA legend as L’affaire Lafargue, led to the resignation of Stu McCorkindale from TCBA play. The franchise was kept in Bergen and co-opted by the league for a single season in 1996, until Casey Lyman was granted permission to move the team to Portsmouth, where the franchise remained until 2012. In 2013, Lyman sold his interest in Franchise #5 to none other than McCorkindale’s old buddy, Tom Meade, who moved the team to Eastport for the 2013 season.
